It is the end of Mughal rule. Agra has witnessed large-scale destruction because of constant attacks by the Marathas, the Rajputs, the English and the Jats. Everyone in Agra is finding it hard to make both ends meet. Depression prevails over Agra Bazaar as nothing sells.
Agra Bazaar portrays a city`s struggle in recessionary days through commoners - the Kakdiwala, the Patangwala, Fakir, Businessman, Madari, Hizra, Tarboozwala - who are in deep despair because there are no buyers.
Habib Tanvir brilliantly portrays the two opposite poles on the stage. On the one hand, there is a kite shop, and on the other, a bookshop and in the middle lies the bazaar. Thus, he brought the entire social spectrum to the stage in one stroke. This had a lot to do with his democratic consciousness, which is beautifully reflected in his plays.
He shares once that in Agra Bazar he wanted to show the contrast to the working class, that the educated privileged of Nazir’s time praised him as a person, but overlooked him as a poet. This was the point that gave him an idea of the bookseller, who helps the play move ahead and whose shop becomes the two opposing poles of the marketplace. The play is marked by its imaginative plot and its inventive and simple story.
