About
Natya Vriksha’s WORLD DANCE DAY celebrations have acquired a pan-India legitimacy, and curated by Dancer (Padmashri) Geeta Chandran, the 2022 edition promises to be bigger and better! With workshops, dialogues, seminars and performances by young dancers, the two-day programme offers invaluable fare for both the dance community and to all those others interested in the arts!
Coming back after a hiatus of years, NATYA VRIKSHA’s WORLD DANCE DAY Celebrations have a very interesting program lined up over two days on Friday and Saturday, 22nd and 23rd April, 2022, at the India International Centre.
The morning on Day I would feature a Koodiyattam Workshop by Dr. Kalamandalam Krishnendu.
Koodiyattam enshrines satwik abhinaya. In this workshop participants will learn how, through heroic characters and nature symbols, the face can be mobilized to express the innermost human sentiments.
The Workshop is free and open to dancers of all classical styles. Loose comfortable clothing that does not restrict movements is suggested. To register for the workshop please WhatsApp your name, dance style, and number of years learnt on 9810606833
The morning on day 2 features a National Seminar on Assessing Classical Group Choreography – Past, Present and Future featuring all-time greats of Indian Classical Dance Choreography: Vidushi Madhavi Mudgal, Vidushi Shama Bhate, Vidushi Dr. Anita Ratnam, Vidushi Vanashree Rao, and Shri Sanjeev Bhargava as panelists. The session will be moderated by Vidushi Geeta Chandran.
One of the interesting features of this year's World Dance Day program is a conversation – NARTHAKI.COM@30
From a humble phone directory to an award-winning online portal connecting the global dance world, with main focus on the Indian dances, narthaki.com is every Indian dancer and dance aficionado’s one stop for information.
Founded by Dr Anita Ratnam, narthaki.com is not only a platform for interviews, profiles, reviews, previews and performance listings, but also a place to discover and nurture new talent in the dance world through curated commissions.
Now in its 30th year, it is truly the gateway to the world of Indian dance.
This segment will feature founder of Narthaki, Dr. Anita Ratnam in conversation with Padampriya, Dancer/Actor/Activist
These would be followed by the evening solo dance recites by young and talented dancers from different parts of India. This year, Day 1 features recitals by Dr. Kalamandalam Krishnendu (Koodiyattam), and Sowmya Laxmi Narayanan (Bharatanatyam), while Day 2 features recitals by Lipsa Satpathy (Odissi) and Abhimanyu Lal (Kathak)
During the World Dance Day festivities, 3rd Natya Vriksha Lifetime Achievement Award will be conferred upon Mr. Brij Mohan Gupta for his contribution to the Indian Classical Dance (Make-Up)
This is the 15th year of my curating World Dance Day events with the India International Centre in Delhi. So many artists have participated; my fondest memories are of (late) Mrinalini Sarabhai, Kumudini Lakhia, Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan sharing their experiences at the Natya Vriksha forum. The Young Dancers Festival has become a showcase for young talent. Each year I try to change the format of the observance; sometimes it is lectures, other times it is films, discussions, seminars, workshops, and demonstrations. The fluidity of the festival is its strength and its resilience. This year, the Festival is bigger and more exciting. The workshop and a Seminar will get young dancers moving. The conversation with Dr. Anita Ratnam is there and then the young dancers - all so ferociously talented -- would present their skilful acts! 2022 World Dance Day will be highly memorable as we are having the festival after a two-year break because of the pandemic, says Dancer (Padmashri) Geeta Chandran
