Event Description: The Unremembered: Indian Soldiers of World War II, Illustrated lecture by Prof. Annu Palakunnathu Mathew, Professor of Art, University of Rhode Island who is presently in India on Fulbright Fellowship collecting family photographs and stories of these Indian soldiers

By 1945, 25 lakh Indians had volunteered to take up arms for their British Colonial rulers during the Second World War. Thirty Victoria crosses, and over 87,000 died. Yet globally they are barely remembered. Artist and Professor Mathew will parse out this complicated history through her artwork, which is a striking blend of still and moving imagery. She draws on archival photographs to re-examine historical narratives. Her presentation will include her work from the 2018 Kochi-Muziris Biennale.
