Sunit Tandon introduces a studio film of Puccini’s most popular and quintessentially ‘romantic’ opera about a group of starving artists trying to survive in 1830s Paris, including a seamstress, Mimi and the would-be playwright, Rodolfo, whom she loves. La Boheme virtually defines the term ‘romantic’ and Zeffirelli’s productions of it for major opera houses of the world were a benchmark of their time.
