Chair: Amb. Lalit Mansingh
Using slides and video clippings, Dr. Sethi’s two lectures will interrogate the early history of Indian dance in America by those who imagined India and danced Indian dances like, Ruth St. Dennis and Ragini Devi; Uday Shankar and his troupe’s successful performances in USA and the first students who came to India to learn dance firsthand; dancers of Indian origin who migrated over the ensuing decades, how did they keep their art relevant yet “authentic” on foreign soil; the introduction and acceptance of other dance forms in addition to classical Indian dance; the ever growing presence of Indian dance scholars in dance departments of universities; and the increasingly comfortable traversing of both nations today
