Event Description :
DOC FILM "Enchanted Ajanta" in English

A film on the ancient Buddhist mural paintings of the Ajanta caves, with unique photography that brings out the luminous colours of the paintings.

Followed by an interaction with the filmmaker

Year : 2002

Film Duration : 30 mins.

Director : Benoy K. Behl

Director's Comment : When I photographed the Ajanta paintings, in their details and colours, the then Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India Mr. M.C. Joshi was very kind to write that I had “conquered the darkness” of the Ajanta caves. Through this photography, the world discovered that the colours of the Ajanta paintings are still bright.

The paintings of Ajanta are today being recognized worldwide as one of the most significant and magnificent bodies of the paintings of mankind. Over one hundred Universities and Museums in the USA, Europe and Asia have invited me to deliver illustrated lectures on Ajanta. This marvellous treasure of India’s art is at last finding its true place in the world.

Ajanta is indeed an enchanted place. It is the recognized fountainhead of the paintings not only of India but of all of Asia. This film depicts the glorious beauty and the compassionate themes of the paintings of Ajanta. It also shows the spread of Ajanta’s tradition of art to the many corners of India and to Sri Lanka, Myanmar, China and Japan.

As you may be kindly aware, my book on THE AJANTA CAVES, published by Thames & Hudson, London and New York, is studied at universities world-wide. It is in its 6th print run and is the best-selling book on Indian art history in the world.
