Sunit Tandon introduces a live recording of a recent production of one of the most popular comic gems of the bel canto repertoire. A poor peasant tries to win the hand of a beautiful lady with intellectual pretensions. Throw in a rival in the form of a swaggering Sergeant and a travelling quack who sells love potions, stir with the dazzling music of Donizetti (including the famous “Una furtiva lagrima”), and you get sheer operatic magic..
