Habitat Photosphere in collaboration with Wildlife Trust of India presents Gajyatra, an exhibition of illustrations to raise awareness about elephant conservation
As part of its year-long multi-media festival on sustainable development titled Habitat Photosphere curated by Dr Alka Pande, the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi is collaborating with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) to present ‘Gaj Yatra’ - an exhibition of illustrations on the elephant to raise awareness about conservation and protection of India’s national heritage animal – at Mandi House Metro Station from August 1 to September 31, 2018.
These illustrations have been created by Rohan Chakravarty, a cartoonist, illustrator and creator of the series ‘Green Humour’- India’s first internationally syndicated comic strip (Universal Press Syndicate’s Gocomics). Other than comics, Rohan collaborates frequently with organizations and state-run boards to bring out illustrated awareness material on wildlife. Rohan has won awards by the UNDP, Sanctuary Asia, and WWF International and the Royal Bank of Scotland for his work.
He says, “Elephants provide indispensable services to the ecosystems they inhabit, such as dispersing seeds and rejuvenating rainforests. But this is just one of the reasons why elephants occupy such a special place in my heart. If you've observed a herd of elephants even for a few minutes, you will be wonderstruck at how beautifully they communicate and emote with their dear ones, without relying much on vocalization. A simple nudge with the trunk, a gentle flap of the ear, an encouraging pat on a calf's back- these gestures speak a lot more than sounds or words. Inspired by this very trait of elephants, this wordless comic-cum-colouring book, 'Where's Gaju's Herd?' tries to tell a story about the conservation threats that elephants in India face today, through the eyes of Gaju, a happy-go-lucky baby elephant who loses track of his family."
Gajyatra is WTI’s nation-wide campaign launched in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
