Event Description : Alliance Française de Delhi – Ciné-Club presents "Carmen (opera)" French with English subtitles.
Plot: She is born free; she will die free. Sometimes a cigar-maker, sometimes a smuggler, a little witch too, and often in love. Able to make Don José desert or to coax the bullfighter Escamillo, she is the ally of love, this rebellious bird and child of Bohemia who looks so much like him. First name: Carmen. On these two syllables, Prosper Mérimée has built a short story about which George Bizet shot a character that his opera transformed into myth. That of the free woman listening to her desire without caring about propriety, and condemned to die under the blows of a deserter devoured by passion. The myth tells infinity of possible readings. Although it has become the most popular opera in the world, Carmen remains susceptible to the newest approaches, like any universal masterpiece. The visionary director Dmitri Tcherniakov's vision promises lively emotions: like Merimee, his show portrays Carmen through José's eyes. And in the vertigo of a millimetric actor's direction, under the untied wand of Pablo Heras-Casado, the eternal two-way dance of love to death is played again. The eternal dance of love to death is repeated.
