Event Description: SaMaPa (Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts) is organizing the 3rd edition of the ‘World Santoor Day’
The day “22nd June” was announced and celebrated as the first ever ‘World Santoor Day’ in the year 2024 by the artist and the creative arts fraternity including legends like Sh. AR Rahman, Sh. Anup Jalota, Sh. Kailash Kher, Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Vidushi Sumitra Guha, Sh. Siddharth Kak, Pandit Vijay Shankar Mishra, Ustad Akram Khan, Ustad Rafiuddin Sabri, and many others together with various prominent cultural organizations of the country.
This occasion, which is just a day after the World Music Day, marks the Birth Anniversary of late Pt. Bhajan Sopori ji, the Great Saint Music Legend who was hailed as the “Saint of Santoor” and the “King of Strings”, and the Master who created the “Sopori Baaj”, the unique and formal system of playing Classical Santoor.
The “World Santoor Day” is aimed at playing a pivotal role in highlighting the rich cultural heritage and historical significance of Kashmir and the Kashmiri Santoor - the Shatatantri Veena, on global stage. This day honours Bharat’s Kashmiri Santoor's legacy as a precursor to similar looking instruments worldwide, emphasizing its deep roots in the Kashmir Shaivism culture. By bringing international attention to the Santoor's unique history and its integral role in Kashmiri tradition, the ‘World Santoor Day’ fosters a greater appreciation and understanding of this exquisite instrument and the cultural philosophies it embodies, promoting cultural diversity and unity through music.
