DAY I: Saturday, 25 April 2026
9.30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
YANGSHAK MOVEMENT WORKSHOP
Facilitator: Surjit Nongmeikapam
FREE WORKSHOP OPEN TO ALL DANCERS

Yangshak arises out of two words “Yang” - Spine (Internal) and “Shak” - Image (External).
Yangshak Movement is an exploration into ‘Lairen Mathek’ — a philosophy that has evolved from the movements and stories of the Manipuri martial art form, Thang-Ta (Khuthek Lal Thek) and dance, Jagoi.

The workshop on choreographing Yangshak, facilitated by Surjit Nongmeikapam (choreographer and contemporary performing artist) focused on an in-depth understanding of the body with the help of Yangshak movements.

The workshop will focus on helping participants to work on their breathing, impulse, weight shifting, momentum, spine and geometrics. It will also employ Manipuri Martial arts Thang-Ta and Manipuri traditional dance to explore body movement.

4 p.m. PRAVAAHITA (Marathi and Hindi Repertoire) - Illustrated Lecture/Performance by Dr. Sucheta Bhide Chapekar (Pune), accompanied by Arundhati Patwardhan and Sagarika Patwardhan

Pravāhitā, means continuation - Paramparā. The program features three generations of dancers, Guru Dr. Sucheta Bhide-Chapekar, her daughter Smt. Arundhati Patwardhan and granddaughter Ku. Sagarika Patwardhan.

In this program Sucheta Bhide-Chapekar with her daughter and granddaughter will present traditional BharataNatyam compositions as well as her newly established innovative presentation which she calls NrityaGanga. It is a confluence of BharataNatyam dance technique and Hindustani classical music.
This performance showcases the variety of compositions as well as focuses on the importance and beauty of a dance tradition passed on through generations.
