Where dance and Earth flow as one
Concept & Choreography by Padma Shri Awardee Malavika Sarukkai
“When a man plants a tree, he plants himself.”
– John Muir (1838 – 1914), Naturalist and Conservationist
Renowned Bharatanatyam exponent Malavika Sarukkai returns to the stage with Beeja – Earth Seed. The performance is a powerful new production that confronts the ecological and emotional fractures of our time. Rooted in the classical vocabulary of Bharatanatyam and elevated by contemporary urgency, the performance is both a celebration of Earth’s generosity and a searing wake-up call to humanity.
In this 75-minute solo work, Sarukkai’s dancing body becomes a site of transformation, shifting from harmony to menace, beauty to dissonance. Through evocative movement, poetry, ambisonic sound design, and inventive lighting, she brings forth the voices of the tree, the deer, and the swan, subaltern presences often silenced in human-centric narratives.
“Beeja – Earth Seed germinated from the realization that in my lifetime, the planet has been exploited to dangerous levels in the name of economic growth,” says Sarukkai. “I wanted to center the emotions and wisdom of non-human life, using Bharatanatyam as my language of expression.”
Featuring a blend of live and recorded music, the production invites audiences into a deeply immersive experience, where dance becomes seed, and the stage, fertile ground for reflection and renewal.
