Event Description: Partition Beyond ‘Lines’
In 1947, a line was drawn across the subcontinent. It was more than a border—it was a rupture through shared culture, homes, histories, languages, and lives. It scarred generations, yet it also birthed stories of resilience, absurdity, and survival.
This Baithak is to tell a story of incomprehensibility of Partition, not just a tale of grief. It is about uncovering the little-known, almost unbelievable stories that shaped it. Did you know entire libraries had to be divided—book by book? That Panjab University itself was split in two? How inmates of asylums were discussed for justifiable distribution among two countries?
That Lahore’s fate hung in the balance till the very last moment? These fragments of history are not just facts—they are windows into the everyday chaos of 1947.
Through powerful writings of voices like Amrita Pritam, Krishan Chander, Khwaja Ahmed Abbas, Faiz and others, alongside fascinating anecdotes from history, this baithak invites you to journey beyond the headlines of Partition. Into the absurd and the humane, the tragic and the hopeful—the stories that still ripple through our present.
Join us as we read, reflect, and rediscover a moment that was not just about drawing a line, but about reshaping memory, identity, and connection. Because the Partition was never only about borders—it was about people, and the echoes of their lives that continue to speak to us today.
