“Kaun Jaye Zauk, Dilli ki Galiyan Chor Kar?”
Born and brought up in vibrant Delhi, the poet Zauk’s sentiment resonates with me and its urban-scapes and structures have crept into my artworks as well. As in Delhi the melding of modern and the vintage has shaped how I perceive, my psychology and aesthetics.
The lived-in old buildings, surrounded and interrupted by tangled electric wires, signboards, defaced walls with scraps of peeling colourful posters fascinate and mesmerise me.
And therein comes the paradox...much as I love it, I find it confining at times. The modern structures which draw me in, also suffocate and make me want to run away and breathe!
The beauty and the chaos co-exist... There is a beauty in this chaos and chaos in its beauty.
This dilemma of modern city life is what I strive to portray. I do not plan my compositions, the artworks I make are intuitive and evolve over time and so is the use of different materials.
My medium is Mixed Media. It can be found objects, like hangtags, expired Credit/ATM cards, like garment wash care labels, dried acrylic paint blobs, wrappers, magazine/newspaper, POP, house paint, candle wax, nylon mesh, acrylics, oil paints, scrap of bandage/cloth, twigs and threads. I feel it comes from my upbringing.
My mother was very conscious of reducing and recycling any objects she lay her hands on and I feel that has also led me to incorporate the same practice in my art, in my own way. This has enabled me to maintain a connection with my roots.
