Event Description: The Babu & The Bazaar, Art from 19th and Earth 20th Century Bengal.
Now Open at our gallery in New Delhi is The Babu & The Bazaar, an exhibition that attempts to unravel parts of Calcutta’s history and culture, featuring artworks that are all over a hundred years old and registered as non-exportable historical artefacts. The resplendent oils depict divinities and humans in exquisite jewellery and clothing and are elaborately detailed with female figures shown in patterned sarees of gold and red with abundant ornaments ranging from crowns, earrings and anklets to necklaces. Male figures are shown in dhotis and kurtas, sometimes with capes and headdresses. Patronage from the business community of western India is arrested to with women shown dressed in the traditional ghagra and choli. Alongside the oils are exquisite watercolour pat paintings, reverse glass paintings from Canton in China, and instances of early printmaking—most of them dealing with the same subjects. We welcome you to drop by to see this exhibition.
