Fluid Emotion: Distilled Ecstasy, A Solo Show of Deveshi Goswami

Profile:
Deveshi Goswami is a Fine Artist from New Delhi, India. She’s fascinated by the concept of ‘now’ - how art is a medium of expression in the moment. All her conscious decisions made in that moment, with a leeway given to the idea of indeterminacy are driving factors that determine the end result on the medium. Her recent works have no preconceived subjects. She allows the techniques of chance making and play to initiate the creative process. Based on her personal aesthetic, she brings a semblance of balance and harmony with the forms and abstract shapes that are present in her artwork. Deveshi recently exhibited her works at the Miaja Gallery, Singapore.

Artist Statement:
A Lasalle College of the Arts graduate, I’ve been painting from an early age, always been fascinated by the concept of ‘now’- how art is a medium of expression in the moment. All conscious decisions made in that moment with a leeway given to the idea of indeterminacy are driving factors that determine the end result on the medium
I have worked with staining the canvas without traditional tools and making accidental marks, bringing a certain softness and fluidity in the work. The use of natural methods and tools coincidentally present within my range (like paint, roller, colour sticks, empty spray cans, spatulas) corroborates the role of Aleatoricism (which is the incorporation of chance into the process of creation, especially the creation of art or media) in the methodology of my art.
Another thing that comes into play is the process of painting with the canvas sprawled on the floor. This process is practiced till the completion of the artwork. The work is activated only when the canvas is stretched on the frame, completely reversing the hierarchy of painting and making artworks. The viewer tends to get enticed with the artwork with every form and mark; which gives a feeling of joy, freedom, and liberation.
The use of automatism has played a significant role in my paintings. I made use of this technique as a starting point, inspired by the notion of physical energy expressed through the movement of artist’s hand on the canvas. All my works presented have had no preconceived subjects. I allowed the techniques of chance making and play to initiate the creative process, and then brought a semblance of balance and harmony, based on my personal aesthetic.
