Event Description: Confluence: Beyond Boundaries, Exhibition by Jang Hee Mun and Devendra Shukla

‘Confluence’ is an art exhibition by two artists from South Korea and India, who have been working in India for the past two decades. This exhibition expresses the difference and synergy that defines the unique identities of these two artists, and in the process, presents a body of works that embodies the very energy of these two contrasting cultures, its’ people and the borders that divide them.

Though we are all the same, we are identified by the borders that surround us. The limits of our territory create an incentive for conflict and discrimination, creating social and mental disturbances for all that accept it. The Republic of Korea and India have both experienced their personal tragedies and hardships through the painful partitions and hostilities that surround their countries.

The purpose behind this show is to move beyond boundaries and celebrate life with love, peace and unity. We generally tend to highlight the differences between countries. However, we should also see the common journey of the culture and tradition of the two countries This exhibition shows us this ideal through the eyes of two artists, who have witnessed 2 decades of Indian art and the changes in its’ art scenario while residing in India. The culmination of this knowledge has allowed them to adapt their perception and understanding of the world, instilling a uniqueness in their artworks.

 Art Exhibition:

The art exhibition is a combination of paintings, drawings, traditional Korean ink and rice works, mixed media and a darkroom video installation. The sizes of these artworks range from 1 x 1 ft to 16 x 5 ft

Inspired by her South-Korean roots, Jang Hee Mun uses harmonious colours and creates strong tonal variation with a slight touch of traditional oriental art. Whereas the artist from India, Devendra Shukla uses bold and bright colours with a noticeable influence from Indian traditional art forms and the natural environment.

Both of the artists use semiabstract forms inspired by the energy and creative images of nature, the environment and the human body. Installations utilizing video art, metal structures and other outlying modern mediums have been used by them to create unique creative formations that would certainly fascinate a wary eye.
