6-day long SOPAN Festival

*Young talents to showcase classical and traditional art forms*

The young and upcoming artists of Sahitya Kala Parishad along with the Art, Culture & Language Department of Delhi Government under Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, are organizing SOPAN which is a festival of Young Musicians and Dancers. 

Sharing his views on the Sopan festival, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia said, “It is a matter of pride and celebration when today’s young talents come together and invest their time and energy to promote our traditional Indian art forms like dance, music and instruments. We are proud of these young upcoming stars and are glad that Sahitya Kala Parishad is setting platforms like Sopan to provide them with an audience base.”

Sopan, The Festival of Young Musicians and Dancers, will showcase the young scholarship holders of Sahitya Kala Parishad who pursue this to learn further in the field of Classical Dance and Music. Spread over 6 days, this year around 24 artists who got the scholarship from Sahitya Kala Parishad will be performing at this platform. Therefore, the young scholarship holders of Sahitya Kala Parishad are taking forward the traditional Indian art forms such as Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Odissi and classical music. The festival will be inaugurated by the Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia.

*Schedule and key attractions of SOPAN festival*

13 December:
The first day of the festival will kick start with a melodious Violin presentation by G. Raghavendra Prasad, Kathak by Garima Arya Chaturlal. Bharatanatyam by Ankita Kaushik who will perform Shuddha Brahma followed by an Allaripu. Later, she will perform on Om Namo Narayana composed by Ambujam Krishna and end her performance with a Thillana. Another Kathak performance by Jaya Pathak will also take place.

14 December:
The second day will witness another set of brilliant artists who will mesmerise the audience with their talents. The day will start with musical vocal by Riya Banerjee, this will be followed by Pakhawaj presentation by Bhanu Sisodia. Later, Reshma Suresh will present Mohinniattam. The evening will come to an end by Siddi Goel’s Kathak ensemble.

15 December:
The third day will start with Shivam Dubey’s vocal performance followed by a violin ensemble by Komal Nirwan. Later Yamini Dikshit will present her Odissi performance. Vrinda Baheti ended the evening with her Kathak performance in which she will start her performance with an invocation followed by traditional Kathak dance repertoire.

16 December:
On the fourth day, Akshay Gupta will present a vocal performance followed by Ankita Dhingra’s Sitar ensemble. Tanya Gambhir, a senior disciple of Guru Smt Kanaka Sudhakar will be performing 2 pieces in Bharatanatyam dedicating her performance to Lord Krishna. The lotus-eyed Lord is depicted in two different moods, the first piece is an Ashtapadi Yahi Madhava, where Radha is condescending of Krishna’s behaviour with other Gopis and turns into a Khandita Nayika which is set to raagam Bharavi and taalam Aadi whereas the second piece is an all praise thillana in Ragaam Dhanashree and taalam Aadi.
Later in the evening and Shruti Kotnala will end the evening by her Kathak dance.

17 December:
On the fifth day, S Avinash will present his Carnatic vocal. Mehtab Ali Khan who belongs to the very famous Bhendi Bazar Moradabad Gharana will perform a Sitar ensemble. Anannya Chatterjee will perform Bharatanatyam followed by a pure classical form of Kathak dance presented by Saloni Kapoor who is learning Kathak of Lucknow Gharana under Jyotsana Banerjee’s guidance from past 9 years.

18 December:
On the last day of the festival, the audience will be mesmerized by a melodious performance by Pavithra Chari who will present a Vilambit and drut khayal and a nirgun bhajan. , will be followed by Pakhawaj by Roman Das. Tanya Saxena who is trained by renowned Gurus - Padma Bhushan Dr Saroja Vaidyanathan and Smt. Rama Vaidyanathan - and at present is being mentored by Smt. Kamalini Dutt will present 2 items in Bharatanatyam- Lakshmi Vandana, a salutation to the Goddess Lakshmi and concludes with a traditional Tillana. Avinav Mukherjee is a multi-faceted artist. will culminate the evening with his Kathak performance in which he will perform 3 pieces namely Shiva Vandana which is an invocation to almighty followed by Taal Dhamaar, a pure nritta aspect of Kathak and later will end his performance with Krishna Leela.
