Event Description: Ramayana, English Play by Children's Workshop Students
This production seeks to bridge the gap between a well known, revered epic and the lived experience of its child actors. The script by Ravi Raj Sagar has been adapted by the director to reflect this aim. Rather than depicting the characters only as gods, demons and vanaras, representing undiluted good, evil and devotion respectively in a tale whose sequence is a foregone conclusion for Indian audiences, the children have been encouraged to discuss and enact the dramatic justification for the events.
Even the best-intentioned among us can commit a grave wrong if we allow anger to lead our actions. Similarly, deeds with a negative fallout, like betrayal, or coveting what belongs to another, may well be rooted in loyalty or genuine love, depending on the perception of those affected by them.
The attempt here is to draw the children's attention to the concepts of multiple perspectives and alternative readings of a well-known text. The hope is that this experience of theatre will enhance in them the potential for inculcating harmony in a world torn apart by violence.
At the same time, using elements of mime, dance and music, the production retains the pageantry, colour, fun and devotion associated with the epic.
