Event Description : THEATRE : Pooja Sehgal Batta Theatre presents Dramaturgy Theatre Group's "Katha Ek Kans Ki'' Hindi Play
Synopsis : The play describes the journey of a child from being a kind hearted prince, who could jump into the river to retrieve the doll of his sister Devki, to a cruel king who imprisoned the same sister. While escorting Devki to her in-laws, Kans hears a prophecy that foretells his death in the hands of the eighth child of Devki. This is when he imprisons his sister and kills all her new born children. There is also an anecdote about Kans. It is said that when he was a child his father left him in the forest to test his courage. Kans showed courage when alone, but started crying at the sight of his father. This proves that he was as fearful as he was cruel.

Does being ruthless or harsh defines masculinity? Does killing, taking up arms, being violent define masculinity? Can't men be gentle? Can't men be beautiful? Can't men tear their eyes ? These are some of the questions that hurt the so-called definition of masculinity since centuries. These questions are being asked by the play "Katha Ek Kansa Ki".
In relation to our contemporary social fabric, the play asks us serious questions like aren’t we still raising our children under the same norms regarding masculinity. Even today, patriarchial evils are prevalent, we do not allow them the tears of crying. Even today we tell them that men have to be brave but we forget to show them the line that separates bravery from cruelty ?
