Event Description : DOC FILM : Doordarshan's "Sacred Buddhist Dance" in English by Benoy K Behl

In the 4th century, in the region of Kashmir, Asanga and Vasubandhu developed the Yogachara school of Buddhism, which was to travel far and wide. In the 8th century, Guru Padmasambhava who was teaching in Kashmir, took a highly developed form of this Buddhism and its sacred dance to Ladakh, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Western Tibet and other places.

For 43 years I have travelled repeatedly to all corners of India and to many countries of Asia, to explore and document culture. In all this time, the most fascinating living cultural tradition I have come across is this magical dance of liberation of the Lamas.

The Cham is a marvellous meditative practice, with deep roots in the essence of Buddhist philosophic thought. It is also a wonderful occasion when the Lamas share their journey and mystical experience with the local community who gathers around them. I would say that this is one of the few examples surviving today of the true purpose of dance in ancient Indian culture. As such, this is of great value and its purity must be preserved.

India Habitat Centre and I have renewed our collaboration to share with the Delhi audience the magnificence of ancient Indian art and culture. It gives me great pleasure to invite you for the screening of my film ‘Sacred Buddhist Dance’, produced for Doordarshan.
