Chair Dr. Ramesh C. Gaur Director & Head Kala Nidhi, IGNCA

Brief profile of Speaker: PhD in history, working as university lecturer at Karlstad University, Sweden, responsible for the education program in Archival Science at our university

Brief summary of Talk: In Sweden, scanning of archives have gone on since the 1990s and was predessesed by a major microfilming, that started already in the 1950s. The scanning is runned by a branch of the National Archive of Sweden through a certain quality system, "the digital chain". Today, all population data in the church records from the 1600s and until 1991 are scanned, after that period, the population records are all computerized. Lots of other types of archive material is also scanned, like hundred of thousands of maps with description, all from the 1600s and onwards. The scanning activities continue and the scanning center has also done work for archives in other countries

Sweden has since about a decade a principle of digitizing of all dutys made by national authori ties. Many regional and local communities work in that direction as well. Digitizing solves many problems, but it also creates new ones. Security issues, issues of long term safe keeping etc are some of those.

I will try to describe the development of archive digitizing. I can also show some examples of the products that now are publicly accessible for everybody through the internet.
