Event Description : SPORTS : 21st USHA National Athletics Championship for the Blind 2018
The 21st edition of IBSA's bi-annual National Athletics Championship for the Blind, the largest sports event for the visually challenged in the country.
The Meet will be inaugurated by Hon’ble Shri Rao Inderjit Singh, President PCI and Minister of State, Ministry of Planning and Chemical & Fertilizers at 11:00 am on Monday, 10 December at Thyagaraj Sports Complex.
A record number of 603 visually impaired athletes along with officials and support from 86 affiliate institutions from 19 states across the country are participating in various track and field athletic events and chess competition. The participants include budding as well as top national and international athletes. Significantly, the number of female athletes has crossed 200. Divided into two age categories of Intermediate boys and girls (between 14 to 17 years) and Open men and women (not below 14 years) the participants will compete separately according to their sight/vision classifications, namely, B-1 (totally blind) and B-2 & B-3 (partially sighted) classes. The track events include 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500 and 5000m and relay races. Field events will have long jump, shot put, javelin and discus throw. The only indoor event is chess.
About Indian Blind Sports Association : Established in 1986 Indian Blind Sports Association is a national level sports federation affiliated to the International Blind Sports Federation – the apex world sports body for the visually challenged as well as to the Paralympics Committee of India. The Association has 236 Institutions/ organizations from 25 states as its members. As an affiliate of the world body, IBSA selects, trains and sends blind sportspersons from India to participate in International events including the World Championships and Games for the Blind.
