Event Description :
Kiran Nadar Museum of Art invites you to an evening of Thol Pavai Koothu – shadow puppet theatre from Tamil Nadu by Muthulakshmana Rao & Troupe (Theni district, Tamil Nadu)

Team members: Rajaram A, Ramakumar M, Kalimuthu M, Manikandan M

The troupe will perform the episode of Kiskindha Kaandam - a narrative from Ramayana among other stories.

Language: Tamil

Rao hails from Genguvarpatti in Theni district and whose family has been performing ‘Thol pavai koothu’ for generations. He, along with his troupe, has experience of performing in many places in Tamil Nadu and other parts of India. He is also a recipient of many awards.

Shadow puppeteers create performances by manipulating leather puppets, between a light source and the screen. Today’s cinema owes a lot to the shadow puppet theatre. They can be considered as original filmmakers before the technology of camera and projection came in.  In India the shadow puppet theatre is called by different names. ‘Thol Pavai Koothu' in Tamil Nadu, `Tholu Bommalata’ in Andhra Pradesh, `Thogalu Bombeyata' in Karnataka, `Thol Pavai Koothu' in Kerala, `Ravana Chaya’ in Orissa and ‘Chandi Bahulya’ in Maharashtra. Earlier the leather puppets were made from deer skin, but today, different permitted leather or other materials are used for making puppets. Traditionally oil lamps were used as the light source, but today, many puppeteers in India use light bulbs and even color lights. The screen size and the designs of the puppets, varies in each State as also the no of puppeteers manipulating the puppets behind the screen. Puppeteers prefer doing the Ramayana story, but are also adept in doing other stories. Apart from India, this art form is popular in Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and China.

This programme has been organized as a collateral event of ‘DELIRIUM // EQUILIBRIUM – an exhibition of videos, films and kinetic objects’

curated by Roobina Karode and currently on view at KNMA Saket.

Light refreshments shall be served after the performance.
