Event Description : There is no one way to portray the emotion of ‘love’, and on Delhi-based artist Mohan Singh’s canvas, it is not intense or passionate, instead taking the form of healing and compassion. Especially relevant during these times of mistrust and strife, this exhibition of acrylics on canvas titled Metanoia portrays delicate and spiritual portraits.

Says Shobha Bhatia, Director, Gallerie Ganesha: “The word Metanoia means transformation in one’s way of thinking under some major influence. For an artist, it is the change in direction of his art, stroke by stroke, influenced by imagination and experiences both. Mohan Singh’s paintings are influenced by and showcase love and spirituality.”

Says 46-year-old Singh: “These works express the process of fundamental change in a person’s personality, influenced by ultimate compassion. This change is the prerequisite for healing and requires awakening of spiritual love, which inspires us to dive into an ocean of new wonders and experiences. The figures in the paintings reflect a complete state of metanoia and the dash and dabs of paint are the symbol of change leading to a new feeling, a new relation and a new bonding freed from the materials and practicalities of the complex world.”

Believing that art is not only meant to look nice, but also to make you feel something, Singh seeks to create paintings which are a communication of his inner most self.

Says this Delhi College of Art post-grad: “I have always favoured painting faces and figures because I'm intrigued by the characteristics of human expressions. I believe that faces carry a strong source of emotion and that is exactly what I want for my artworks as well. I want viewers to look at these and feel good. The happiest moment for me is when I catch someone smiling while viewing my paintings.

As for his artistic style, Singh paints his subjects against an intensely coloured and decorated surface. This allows his artworks to take on a psychedelic impression. Because he chooses to paint people as subjects, he mostly explores themes that surround human nature, society and popular culture.

“I took an interest in art because art is a global form of communication. It educates visually by either moving you, pleasing you, or even inspiring you. It has a huge effect on one's emotion, more that a person can affect another by words or action. An object that can bring so much meaning and can move a person emotionally is magical to me. I spark magic through my art by spreading the word of a thought, idea, or even awareness. And in the current scenario, love is an emotion that is needed the most by everyone.”
