Event Description : This travelling photo exhibition focuses on a unique architectural form, that of the stepwell (a well with a flight of stairs attached to it) which evolved in the Western parts of India, especially in Gujarat and Rajasthan that have sandy soil and scanty rainfall. Many of these are now overgrown with weeds, and are used as refuse dumps. One of the key aims of this exhibition is to make the visitors conscious about the sad neglect of these ancient water harvesting structures and open avenue to discussions on how to keep these structures well maintained and clean.
The fact that hundreds of stepwells were excavated tells us about the amount of water that was available in past centuries, and how early engineers solved the problems posed by the loose, sandy soil. This exhibition also displays some large stepwells such as Ranki Vav, Patan and Rudadevi Vav, Adalaj, which must have been full of water in their time long years ago and served as a major unit of water-resource management systems of the ancient times.
This exhibition will travel in six cities of Gujarat including Surat, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Bhuj, Rajkot and Junagarh, as well as in Delhi, between 1st September, 2018 to 8th October, 2018.
This exhibition is held in collaboration with American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS), Gruh Finance Limited, and UChicago Center in Delhi.
