For her work in the field of dance, she has been bestowed with numerous awards including the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan from the Government of India, the Sahitya Kala Parishad Samman, the title of Kalaimamani from the Government of Tamil Nadu & the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
The Shishya : Kaname Tomiyasu turns 11 on the 2nd of September - the same day as her arangetram!
Although born in Thailand, Kaname lived in New Delhi and studied at the New Delhi Japanese School till March 2018 - when she shifted back to Japan with her family. She has been learning Bharatanatyam in Delhi since the young age of 4 and came under the tutelage of Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan at the age of 8. Although initially attracted to the dance form due to the brilliant costumes, jewelries and makeup, she has over time begun to enjoy the dance as an embodiment of Indian culture - picking up Indian mythology, tradition and culture along the way. She considers herself lucky to have learnt from her Guru the virtues of courtesy and respect like the ancient Japanese “Budo” spirit.
Kaname has also trained in ice skating and earned the fourth position at the Indraprastha Figure Skating Cup 2016. She enjoys dancing to Bollywood music.
"Arangetram" is a landmark in the journey of a Bharatanatyam dancer. The performance stands as testament to the fact that after years of rigorous training under a Guru, the student is deemed fit to be presented to an audience as a polished dancer – marking her debut into the field of performance. The student is now proficient to a degree where he/she can perform before public as well as impart training to others.
