Event Description : ART EXHIBITION "Colours" Solo show of paintings by Umesh Kumar Saxena.

These paintings of Umesh Kumar Saxena present various facets of nature through a blend of lyrical colours and musical tones. The emotive richness of pure colour is brought out by the almost complete predominance of one single hue in all its various tones subtly graded to break any chance of monochrome monotony. The colours are mostly cool and in restful harmony; the clash of complementary coloursis avoided. The colours themselves appear in the forms of multiple veils, reminiscent of Mark Rothko, leading the viewer ultimately beyond the physical form of nature to the transcendental.

As befits such a mature artist, only the essentials of nature are retained, the irrelevant rest is completely eschewed, thereby accentuating all the more the emotive effect of what is sought to be conveyed to the viewer. Thus, there are the undulating contours of mountains and boulders conveying a sense of nature's tranquillity, its vastness and its capacity to calm the human senses. It is as if nature is nudging us into its restful lap far from humanity’s ‘madding crowd’. To recall Wordsworth, Nature's mighty heart appears to be lying still to apply balm on the anguished human soul..

What we see is the de-cluttered, primaeval nature devoid of man-made objects or any extraneous individual forms. The desired mood is sought to be created by the artist not through illustrative objects or representational forms but through the sheer music of rich colour and subtly graded shades. The lushness of vegetation during monsoons is captured brilliantly with pure application of sap green tempered with harmonious hues; the untempered cobalt blue of the mountains lends a delicious cooling effect to their charms; a few butterflies drawn inexplicably with white lead the pilgrim into the landscape; the all too cerebral modern-day human is depicted by a gap between the brain and the rest of the body; small patches of white at the top of the hills suggest the pristine purity of snow; the very texture of the stones and boulders seems to narrate their story.

Ultimately, the viewer leaves with the awareness of the profound peace and sublime tranquillity with Nature's silence echoing in his heart.
