Synopsis:-
The narrative of the play, based on the book “Ye Kothewaaliyan” written by Padmbhushan Amrit Lal Nagar in 1960, speaks of the courtesans that excelled in depicting through their music and dance, the poetry of love, Eros and Amor and the varying shades of these
emotions.
However, the society, growing increasingly uncomfortable with this depiction of easy amor in arts, ridiculed, shunned and discarded courtesans as fallen women “Nachnewali”, “Kothewaliyaan“, “Tawaif”.
The play travels through the time and stitches together the real-life story of a famed courtesan with that of a housewife who turned into a harlot.
Amrit Lal Nagar peeps into the lives of the tawaifs and chronicles the human side of these women through their trials and travails, and challenges the stigma attached with them with questions like “Are courtesans separate from the society?”
“If courtesy lives in mansions … Are courtesans the pathways?”
