Event Description : DANCE : Vyuti Dance Company presents "Sakhi" led by Aranyani Bhargav
Sakhi is a piece inspired by the format of a Varnam, and is Vyuti's latest addition to the Vyuti Margam. It examines the relationship between the Nayika and Sakhi, giving the sakhi her due importance in narratives, often sidelined by narratives that revolve around the nayaka-nayika relationship. Taking Vyuti's vocabulary to a new level of exploration, using lifts, contact and floor work, the jatis explore Bharatanatyam further by pushing the boundaries of what modernities are possible within Bharatanatyam, without losing the rich Bharatanatyam tradition. Sung by Sudha Raghuraman, the music is designed by me in terms of structure but composed by Sudha ji, with G Raghuraman on flute and Manohar Balatchandirane on mridangam. This piece essentially celebrates the friendship between these two pivotal female protagonists in Indian classical dance narratives. We will begin the evening with Vyuti's alarippu titled ' Natyarambha' and conclude with Vyuti's Tillana 'Revati', with Sakhi being the center-piece of the performance.
