Event Description : EXHIBITION "Landscape" a combined show of paintings by Aruna Vasudev and Black and white photographs by Achal Kumar.
Art Konsult is showcasing an exhibition of paintings by Aruna Vasudev and B&W photographs by Achal Kumar, a Monochromatic Journeys with a Brush and a Camera.
Inherent in these works is the personal exploration of the interior and exterior landscape, a bridge between the imagined and the concrete realms. They bear different aesthetic visions, but within burgeon similar passions and designs. Black and white enhances their work, it concentrates light and shadow on their basic strokes and resonates with their voices.
"My current works is based on landscape paintings, In Japanese it is called Sumi-e, its equally well known in east Asian countries though from China, Japan & Korea, Vietnam etc." - says Aruna Vasudev
With subtle monochromatic tones and delicate colouration, Aruna Vasudev explores the poetic, dreamlike landscapes of distant mountain realms, forests with haunting vistas, encompassing in their immensity and stillness. Her classic depictions of bamboo and lotus reveal the trained strokes of the traditional painter, moving beyond technique to proffer her personal vision of place and time.
Focusing upon the elemental, Achal Kumar draws the viewer into multi-dimensional tableaux extending beyond the borders of the lens and frame. This permits an effusive conveyance of the power of line, no less of spatial composition. Branches of trees silhouetted by mist, the wings of birds spanning the latitude of a walkway, a path seemingly frozen in time, yet distinctly familiar.
His works are based on Nature & Landscapes. "In my early years I would go for Trekking & Hiking where the nature bug bit me, beauty of which became my passion for rest of my life" - says Achal Kumar
Mist has been an impotant element in Achal kumar photography, because according to him mist has its own graded depth, which gradually blurs the background giving a new perspective to ordinary which has been a perfect inspiration for the photographer.
As an inspiration for Achal the mountains in mist, fresh new leaves, the rain clouds, bare branches, sunsets & sunrises, freedom of birds in flight & mixing of these and other elements of nature inspires him a lot and will keep on inspiring him for his future projects.
The technique he uses with photography is during hids earlier period he printed in a conventional darkroom with films, developers & fixers, light sensitive photo papers, later when the availability of films, paper & chemicals became a challenge, I shifted to digital printing. For Achal creativity is most important, digital or analog are just mediums to achieve it.
There are about 50 prints which are being showcased at the exhibition, with the price bracket of Rs.10,000/- to 35,000/-.
About the Artists :
Aruna Vasudev
Aruna Vasudev studied film and received a PhD in Paris, after which she launched the Asian film quarterly Cinemaya in India in 1988. Thereafter, she founded NETPAC and Cinefan –the Festival of Asian Cinema in Delhi. Photography and painting have been present as artistic undertakings throughout her life. Her immersion in Asian cinema exposed her to the traditional East Asian schools of sumi-e and shan/shui painting, in which she found a natural corollary to both Haiku and Zen philosophy that have fascinated her. She has undertaken intensive study with contemporary masters in Korea, China and Japan. The meditative process of painting nature, of grinding and applying ink to the brush and then painting on delicate rice paper, infuses her life and creative expression.
Achal Kumar
Achal Kumar since childhood has embraced the discipline and challenge of the lens and realms of black and white photography. Ever chronicling the vagaries of flora and fauna throughout Northern India, he has maintained his dedication to the classics of the field. He was the 1997 recipient of a National Academy Award by Lalit Kala Academy(National Academy of Arts) for the image titled "Bend in the Mist”. He taught in the MCRC School of Mass Communication, Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi for 7 years as a Visiting Professor. Furthermore, for two years, he has worked as a freelancer for HT City and the Times of India as a features photographer.
