Event Description :
ARTS 'Cloth - The Second Skin' | A performance by Smitha Cariappa

Our skin can be compared to Freud’s Mystic Writing Pad in its ability to unite the mutually exclusive properties of unlimited receptivity or renewability of the writing surface and the capacity to retain permanent (albeit not unalterable) mnemonic traces. An interface between our internal and external worlds, the skin functions not only as a primary check-point for incoming perceptual information but also as a palimpsest of our personal experiences, pockmarked by time. It offers a medley of scars and tattoos for cultural or personal signification and recollects the charged caress of a lost lover in the form of a shy blush suffusing our cheeks.  Further, it’s reading can be complicated through the addition of adornments or enhancements, both temporary and permanent, such as clothes, accessories, tattoos, scars, henna, make-up and surgical interventions.  In fact, it is possible to view our being as a repository of all the markings, significations and alterations effected by our habits on our bodies just as our clothes are an archive of traces of our dematerialising soma in the form of excoriated skin cells, pheromones, fluids and hair. In a sense, our ‘natural’ state of existence in society is that of being clothed; and clothes comprise a second skin for our prone nakedness, enhancing the body’s capacities and fashioning its kinesthetic and psychic schema. Clothes supply constant companionship to the body, fulfilling its primal need for tactile stimulation and partake in the haptic hide-and-seek of our amorous labours. Moreover, the clothes that we wear leave transient imprints where the fabric comes in contact with our skin, as well as others that are more lasting, and even invisible, characteristic of our patterns of engagement and habits of comportment. Fashion alters and inscribes our bodies in a very real way, being inextricably linked to the modalities of identity formation. Not only do habits of self-presentation play an important role in defining a working sense of the self, but also prime the subject for socio-cultural signification. Conversely, clothes can help us overcome the ‘facticity’ of the body by virtue of their voluminous expressive potential for dissimulation that offers unlimited possibilities for becoming. Smitha Cariappa’s ‘Cloth: The Second Skin’ performs some of these fashions of the skin to underscore the performative, socio-symbolic, expressive and mnemonic operations of this intelligent ‘ephemeral archive’ that comprises our largest sense organ.
