Event Description : H.E. Mr Alexandre Ziegler, Ambassador of France to India presents “Sojourn as an Artist's Virtual Studio” organised in collaboration with Krishnakriti Foundation as part of the ongoing third edition of Bonjour India.
Curated by Dhritabrata Bhattacharjya, this exhibition explores how an artist's temporary stay becomes a virtual studio offering permanent references for their artistic endeavours. The participating artists are fellows of the Krishnakriti Foundation who have attended the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts (Academy of Fine Arts) in Paris and the École supérieure d'art et de design Marseille-Méditerranée (Academy of Art and Design) in Marseille for a full academic year on a fellowship instituted by the Embassy of France and Krishnakriti Foundation in 2008. The curatorial line highlights the contemporary nature of their recent works with the experience and memory of their sojourn in France.
Speaking at the launch, Ambassador of France to India, Mr Alexandre Ziegler, said, "These inspiring artists have followed in the footsteps of maestros like Raza and Amrita Sher-Gil in joining academies of fine arts in France. This continues a long-standing French tradition of welcoming students in France for programmes and trainings in art schools. This exhibition by Krishnakriti fellows is the result of a nine-year-long partnership between the French Embassy in India and Krishnakriti Foundation. As Bonjour India celebrates the rich relationship between France and India through multidisciplinary events, I feel that this exhibition is a great example of long-term bridges built between our two countries through people-to-people ties.”
Mr Prashant Lahoti, managing trustee of Kalakriti, spoke on the occasion "This show is a result of 10 years of faith and trust, the French Embassy and Krishnakriti, together had on the Indian artists from across the country who went to France. What's heartening to see is the new unified voice expressed through their art, which is a result of their stay in France. It is really encouraging and we look forward to many more years association with the French Embassy for sending students to France. "
"When we started conceptualizing this program, we wondered how we would talk about nationalism through art as art does not restrict itself. We tried to highlight the techniques they have learnt, the choice and change of medium and the subjects. The curatorial note for Sojourn broadly states that if you have to know yourself you need to take yourself out of the conference room and travel to foreign lands. And however foreign we might be to each other, there is a space of sharing the commonality with each other" said Mr Dhritabrata Bhattacharjya Tato, curator of the exhibit.
The Krishnakriti Fellowship winners include Dhrupadi Ghosh, Mrinmoy Debbarma, Reji Arackal, Aishwarya Sultania, Ranjan Ghosh, Hetal Chudasama, Dillip Kumar Malik, Megha Katyal, Vikram R.V., Biplab Roy, Anupama Kumari, Swathi Vijay, Vaibhav Sharma, Likhita Mahajan, Naresh Kumar, Shubhankar Prakash Bharti, Premdeep Kour Khere, Anupama Thekkadath.
