Event Description : MUSIC "Swar-Setu: Connecting India and Sri Lanka Through the Strings of Sitar" Sitar recital by Dr. Nirmala Kumari Rodrigo accompanied by Paban Bordoloi on Tabla.
About the Artist : Fascinated with the sitar since childhood, Dr. Nirmala spent over 11 years nurturing her love for the instrument at the Bhatkande College of Music, Lucknow and the Benaras Hindu University before continuing higher studies in music at the University of Cologne, Germany.
Currently Senior Lecturer at the University of Visual & Performing Arts and a super grade artiste in Sitar and Vocal Music at the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, she has held many solo concerts in Sri Lanka, India and Europe. She has also been serving as faculty at the Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo since 1999.
Dr. Kumari would be accompanied on the table by Shri Paban Bordoloi.
A "Nipun" with a first division from Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapith, Lucknow, he had the privilege to have been groomed further by such stalwarts as Ustaad Munney Khan of Farukhabad gharaana, Ustaad Afaque Hussain Khan of Lucknow gharaana and Pandit Ranga Nath Mishra of Banaras gharaana.
He has accompanied stalwarts like the late Vidushi Girija Devi, Pt. Vishwamohan Bhat, the late Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and enthralled audiences in the Middle-East, Sri Lanka and Europe.
Shri Bordoloi presently works as a Grade I tabla player at All India Radio, Guwahati, Assam.
