Event Description : TALK "Printed Maps of India in the Alkazi Collection (15th - 20th century)"
This illustrated talk on vintage maps from the Susan Gole Collection, now part of the Alkazi Collection, volunteers early European samples of the Indian Subcontinent. Touching upon approaches to topography, navigation, military and town planning across five centuries, Ms. Gole will provide a broad account of the interlinked worlds of travel, exploration and survey, highlighting the impact and relevance of early map-making on contemporary cartographic and documentary studies.
Susan Gole's interest in early map-making has spanned over four decades, focusing on identification and collection histories. She has been the Chairperson of the International Map Collectors Society for 9 years, as well as the Editor of their journal. Susan is particularly interested in the pre-1800 cartographic traditions of India, and has written extensively on the same in publications such as Early Maps of India and Maps of Mughal India, among others.
