Event Description : MUSIC : Pro Helvetia - Swiss Arts Council presents an evening of Jazz, classical and Afro-Cuban rhythms with Yilian Cañizares.

Swiss Arts Council is delighted to present a jazz, classical and Afro-Cuban rhythm performance by Swiss- Cuban musician Yilian Cañizares. Her style reflects her various influences with shades of jazz, classical and Cuban music, with a lot of space left for improvisation.

Yilian Cañizares has been considered the discovery of the year 2013 by the French weekly Le Nouvel Observateur and the French magazine Les Inrockuptibles selected her album Invocación in the ten 2015 albums from South America not to be missed.

Yilian Cañizares was born in Havana, Cuba, and studied violin, in the strictest Russian tradition. Her style reflects her various influences with shades of jazz, classical music and Cuban music, with a lot of space left for improvisation. The French magazine Les Inrockuptibles speaks of a jazz instrumentation mixed with Yoruba ritual percussions. She sings in Spanish, Yoruba the language of her West African ancestors, enhancing the lyrics with Afro Cuban percussion and French. One of her hallmarks is that she plays violin and sings at the same time.

She has two acclaimed albums to her credit, 2013’s self-produced Ochumare and 2015’s Invocación, helmed by AlêSiqueira (Roberto Fonseca, OmaraPortuondo). She has been considered the discovery of the year 2013 by the French weekly Le NouvelObservateur and the French magazine Les Inrockuptibles selected her album Invocación in the ten 2015 albums from South America not to be missed.
