Event Description : TALK "Dancing the Nation: The First Inter University Youth Festival,1954 and the Changing Profile of the Indian Artiste" by Arshiya Sethi
The illustrated talk by Dr. Arshiya Sethi captures an early instance of the impact of State governance on the arts, especially dance. Presented in a combination of detailed historical documentation and scrutiny of the early phase of the formation of cultural policy in India, it examines how a statist intervention valorised a new population of practitioners, created new
paradigm of categories, and encouraged change in the presentation and agenda of performative practices. What adds to significance of the talk as it moves between a personal narrative and incisive analysis, is that it covers a phase of performance history, which has, so far, not been a focus of academic enquiry.
About the speaker : Dr. Arshiya Sethi is a Scholar, Commentator, Administrator, Consultant and Activist in the field of Arts and Culture. She did her Ph.d on “Religion, State and Nation: Assam’s Sattras and their Dance”, from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Delhi. Dr. Sethi actively writes in leading journals, newspapers and has also contributed to books on arts and culture. Presently, she is engaged as a Post Doc Fulbright Fellow from India (2017-2018) at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
