Event Description : EXHIBITION "Art by Fire" design show by Ritu Varuni, e'thaan design studio
Curator and designer : RITU VARUNI
Architect and craft designer, writer, Founder and owner, e’thaan design studio
Ritu trained as an architect at the Institute of Environmental Design, D.C Patel School of Architecture, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Gujarat(1986-1991), India and has also been associated with craft design for the last 22 years. Her architectural work in residential and resort design, has been mostly in Delhi and Himachal Pradesh. The designs bear a distinct craft input and detailing with a speciality in wood and bamboo material. She has her own design studio called E’thaan based in New Delhi and Himachal Pradesh which specializes in wood and bamboo design and handskills. The work is based solely on fair trade principles and was started in April 2002 by Ritu Varuni and her late founder partner Bharati Chadha who passed away on 26th December 2011 and was the marketing and sales head for E’thaan.
After completing her research thesis on traditional architecture in Nagaland, she was based in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam for 6 years working on researching and developing the use of bamboo in housing and handcrafted products. She was a part of an NGO, AVARD_NE based in Majuli Island, Assam, where she worked on setting up and training bamboo artisans in new designs and production techniques and in other development issues.
The use, research and development of bamboo as a material for craft and architecture has been the focus of her work in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Nagaland since 1991.Her design work has been regularly exhibited at the India Habitat Centre for the past 17 years and also at the India International Centre, New Delhi.
ABOUT E'THAAN : A belief that craft has its own space and place and defines a way of life.
From the old is born the new. `E’thaan’ is a Lotha Naga Indian word for something`new’. E’thaan stands for creative Indian design rooted in traditional skills but infused with a new spirit. Indian design like the word ‘Indian’ is pluralistic and multi cultural. It is not typical or singular but diverse in style and content as the many peoples and cultures it represents. The primarily wood and bamboo craft based design work with the many exciting and varied Indian craft traditions from Nagaland to Kashmir seeks to create its own unique Indian design identity. A path that leads away from the typical abstract style of the steel and glass western contemporary. A path that belongs to today but retains the quality of warmth that comes from the embers of an old fire.
E’thaan was started in April 2002 by architect and designer Ritu Varuni and her late founder partner Bharati Chadha, head of marketing and sales for e’thaan, who passed away on 26th December 2011.
E’THAAN designs bamboo, wood and stone based architecture and furniture, lights, table ware and interiors with craft inputs. It specializes in wood and bamboo craft design and skill training for which e’thaan conducts its own independent design and technical skill workshop programmes. The partner artisans are paid according to a certain standard, in recognition of their hand skills with the strong belief that these skills can only be preserved if they get the respect that is their due.
