‘TANTU’
Tradition Strung In a Thread

Choreographies from 1961-2016

~Tantu is coming together of 3 generations of artistic sensibilities~

~Tantu is a unique concept presenting the premier of choreographies by Gurus Sharon Lowen, Madhavi Mudgal and the performer of the evening, Madhur Gupta, framed by classics by the major architect of Odissi, Padmavibhusan Kelucharan Mohapatra~

~Tantu has the distinction that two of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra’s prime disciples have created new work especially for their disciple Madhur Gupta~

~Tantu, literally translating to meaning a ‘Thread’, is truly about connecting traditions in a single string!~

Having revived itself from the clutches of anonymity in the last century, Odissi remains the oldest surviving classical dance of the Indian subcontinent. Odissi (also referred to as Orissi in older literature), originated in the Hindu temples of Odisha – an eastern coastal state of India.

During the 50’s Odissi witnessed a period of renaissance and reconstruction, and Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra was one of the major architects of this art form. Guru ji also fondly known as Kelu Babu, through his unrelenting efforts to promote the form, trained and then passed on the art to several of his students, Sharon Lowen & Madhavi Mudgal being his prime disciples
.
Having devoted themselves to Odissi, hailed as the leading international performing artists, their tenacity and perfectionism having earned the respect of audiences and critics alike, both Padmashri Madhavi Mudgal and Guru Sharon Lowen are nonpareil in their art. Following the tradition of passing on accumulated wisdom on to the next generation, Guru Sharon Lowen & Guru Madhavi Mudgal akin to their Guru, trained their disciple Madhur Gupta uncompromisingly to delve deeper and deeper into the intricate art of Odissi dance.

‘Tantu’ is a product of almost a year of hard work on reviving old choreographies, composing new, translating works of poets, getting scholars to give their inputs, composing music, and finally stringing it all together.

Classical dance has ever been flowing from one generation to the other; from one choreographer’s perspective to imagine creative works of art to the other. In a similar vein, this solo Odissi production by Madhur, shall be showcasing choreographies belonging to different generations and eras; how Odissi developed in the 50’s, was refined by the 90’s, and continues to evolve in the current century.

Approaches towards Odissi might differ with generations, but the traditional parameters are deeply rooted in us. Thus, this production shall explore the challenges of not only showcasing the traditional in a contemporary vision, but also carrying forward the baton of Odissi by the new generation.
