Event Description : EXHIBITION : Dravidam Gallery (Bangalore) presents
'Thumbi and Taamara - the transparent soul' presenting the works of two Kerala born artists, Suresh Muthukualmand and Suresh Pushpangathan
In the past few years, the shows have been opened by dignitaries such as Smt Sheila Dikshit, Shri Shashi Tharoor, Shri Jairam Ramesh, Smt Yashodhara Raje Scindia, Smt Chandresh Kumari Katoch and Smt Gursharan Kaur.
Dravidam was established in 1984 by Jaya Mani whose area of expertise is the Tanjore and Mysore paintings of South India on which she has lectured and written for publications. She also consults on art, restoration and evaluation. Jaya has, over the years, curated numerous successful art shows. Dravidam’s focus has now shifted to promoting South Indian artists who draw inspiration from their traditional moorings to produce contemporary works of art. Collaborating in Delhi with Dravidam is well-known professional interior designer, Sumathy Sodhi.
She was awarded the Bharat Marg Dhrishti Award for outstanding achievement in her field. Sumathy is also a member of the American Society of Interior Designers and has a certificate from the Baron’s Who’s Who in Interior design.
Suresh Puspangathan’s childhood was spent watching his father, a traditional sandalwood sculptor, whittling wood to create outstanding sculptures. This, coupled with life in Kerala’s lush green countryside near Varkala, inspired him to start painting nature at an early age. He eventually channelled his creativity by enrolling into Chitrakala Parishath, Bangalore. In 2011, he got a Masters Degree in Art and Design from the University of Bedfordshire, Luton, United Kingdom. Pushpangathan is inspired by the play of light and its ever changing hues evoke the comparison to changing human moods and emotions. Through his deft and sensitive strokes, he captures the interplay of light and colour. The two artists connect the abstract to the real with their evocative works on canvas, silk, rice paper, boxes and screens.
