Odisha has a rich Buddhist heritage and recent archaeological explorations and excavations have brought to light more than 200 Buddhist sites scattered throughout the length and breadth of the state. The discovery of a series of viharas, stupas, Buddhist cult images and scores of material objects of stone, metal, terracotta amply clarify that  for a long period,  extending from the Pre-Christian era to the 12th  century A.D., these establishments promoted  the cause of Buddhist learning of all sects
