Samik Bandhyopadhyay is a scholar, editor-publisher, translator, lexicographer and bibliophile. Currently he is Rabindranath Tagore National Fellow, JNU New Delhi. Among other positions held are Visiting Professor and ICCR Chair at Freie Universitat Berlin, Vice Chairman National School of Drama, Research Professor Asiatic Society, Producer Emeritus, AIR and Doordarshan, Member of the Sangeet Natak Akademi and Central Board of Film Certification, Regional Editor, OUP, Kolkata and Founder-Editor Seagull Books and THEMA.
Written extensively on Indian theatre, translated Badal Sircar and Mahasweta Devi, interviewed eminent film and theatre personalities; Has travelled to UK, USA, Germany, USSR, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh etc. giving lectures and participating in international seminars.
