Event Description : FILM & TALK "Cinema of Alexander Kluge: In the Tracts of Time" by Manas Ray
n February of 1962, 26 aspirant filmmakers under the intellectual mentorship of Alexander Kluge got together to announce the death of Papa Kino and spell out a new cinema bent on questioning the dominant trend in image-making in Germany. As part of the same exploration they also investigated Germany’s unresolved past as it existed in the present. The Oberhausen Manifesto promised a contextual, interventionist, theme-oriented cinema that would comment on the grey seriality of everyday life in (West) Germany’s post-war limbo existence. The New German Cinema movement has produced many stellar film practitioners, but it is perhaps in Kluge’s cinematic work that the promises of the Manifesto find the truest and most innovative expressions. With time, Kluge’s work changes from the international art-film style of interruptive narrative to what might be called ‘collage films’. This retrospective of Kluge’s cinema aims to present a somewhat comprehensive coverage of the cinematic work of a film maker bent on making inconclusive films, both in style and content.
Manas Ray is a Professor in Cultural Studies at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta. He has worked extensively on the cinema of Kluge.
