Is Richard Strauss’ intense one-act early 20th century opera. Sunit Tandon introduces a classic 1980 video recording of a live production from the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, featuring legendary singers Birgit Nilsson and Leonie Rysanek. Elektra grieves for her father Agamemnon, who ha been murdered by her mother Klytaemnestra and her lover Aegisth. She awaits the arrival of her exiled brother Orest, who will avenge their father’s killing… This path-breaking opera “unites the commanding impact of Greek tragedy with the unsettling insights of early-20th- century Freudian psychology.”
