Event Description : DANCE :
Natya Vriksha presents Bharatanatyam Arangetram Performance by Aditi Balasubramanian Disciple of Guru (Padmashri) Geeta Chandran.

CHIEF GUESTS:
(Padma Vibhushan) Vidushi Smt. Sonal Mansingh, Classical Dance Icon & Mr. S. Sandilya, Chairman, EICHER Group

Arangetram is an important occasion in the career of any Bharatanatyam dancer. After several years -- decades even -- of arduous training, when the Guru is confident that the disciple can sustain a solo performance, the Arangetram is announced.
The Arangetram thus is an honour to the Guru; a momentous rite of passage, it marks the first milestone in the disciple’s journey into the ocean of Bharatanatyam.
In the 25 years that she has mentored students at Natya Vriksha, Aditi’s is the 40th arangetram performance that Guru (Padmashri) Geeta Chandran will be presenting.

THE ARTIST: Aditi Balasubramanian
Born in 2001, ADITI BALASUBRAMANIAN started learning Bharatanatyam when she was only three years old. She came under the tutelage of Guru (Padma Shri) Geeta Chandran at the age of six. Under Geeta’s personal attention and guidance for the past nine years, she has explored diverse aspects of Bharatanatyam.
In 2010, Aditi first performed on stage (a Sur Das pad), along with fellow-disciple Arundhathy, on the occasion of Guru Poornima. In 2013, she performed in the Young Dancers Festival as part of the Natya Vriksha World Dance Day Celebrations. Besides stage performances, she has also accompanied her Guru in lecture-demonstration sessions.
In 2011, 2014 and 2015, Aditi and a fellow-disciple won the first position in the Bharatanatyam Duet Category at Bal Kala Utsav, a national talent festival organized by S.U.N.A.I.N.A (Society for the Upliftment of the National Arts of India). In 2015, she and a fellow-disciple also won the first position in the Bharatanatyam Duet Category at Sanskriti Pratibha Utsav organized by Alaknanda Institute for Performing Arts. Aditi has also won the first position in Classical Dance at the Talent Fiesta in The Mother’s International School every year since 2013.
In 2012, the Nandalala Seva Samithi Trust conferred the title of “Parijatham” on Aditi in recognition of her talent in Bharatanatyam. Aditi also holds a Cultural Talent Search Scholarship in Classical Dance, awarded by the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training, Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
Besides Bharatanatyam, Aditi has keen interest in music, calligraphy and painting.

“Dance and I” by Aditi Balasubramanian
Dance has played an important role in my life. I started learning Bharatanatyam when I was in Lower Kindergarten. My parents tell me that whenever I would get even a few minutes of spare time, I would start doing my dance steps irrespective of where we were; once even in a restaurant!
Dance has given me many things — discipline, physical and mental stamina, an understanding of rhythm, a sharper memory, the ability to convey my emotions through gestures and expressions, and above all, huge happiness whenever I have successfully learnt a difficult piece! Dance can never be a hobby for me; it is an integral part of me.
Today, as I stand at the threshold of my arangetram, my first formal solo public performance, I am extremely grateful to God for bestowing on me this passion for dance; to my Guru for lovingly nurturing me, constantly guiding me and giving me opportunities; as well as to my parents for tirelessly supporting and encouraging me. I am determined to work hard, and strive for excellence and perfection in this great dance form.
Dance will always play an important role in my life!

The GURU: (Padmashri) GEETA CHANDRAN

GEETA CHANDRAN: A celebrated artist and a star-performer, Geeta Chandran has synthesised the knowledge she received from a galaxy of eminent Gurus to imprint Bharatanatyam with her personal vision of the dance. In her dance presentations, Geeta Chandran skilfully weaves abstract notions of Joy, Beauty, Values, Aspirations, Myth and Spirituality.

A polymath artist, Geeta Chandran is celebrated not only for her deep and composite understanding of the art of Bharatanatyam, but also for her Carnatic music (she is a trained and accomplished vocalist), her work in television, video and film, theatre, choreography, dance education, dance activism and dance-issue journalism.

Geeta Chandran is Founder-President of Natya-Vriksha and Artistic Director of the Natya Vriksha Dance Company, known for the high aesthetic quality of its group presentations that showcase Geeta’s metier as a visualiser par excellence. Geeta has also created innumerable solo performances that spotlight her aesthetic persona as an eclectic classical choreographer.

An influential spokesperson for classical dance, Geeta Chandran is the author of SO MANY JOURNEYS, an intensely personal collection of her writings narrating her engagement with Bharatanatyam. She also writes an insightful dance column in The New Indian Express/SundayStandard.

A rare combination of being both a luminary and a visionary, Geeta Chandran is a widely respected role model for the young generation. She guides reputed national cultural institutions and prestigious universities as their Board member, and also serves on the Advisory Boards of several reputed schools and colleges.

In her effort to "en-dance the universe," she engages in a strategic range of dance-related activities: performing, teaching, conducting, singing, collaborating, organizing, writing and speaking to new youth audiences.

Geeta was awarded the prestigious national award -- Padma Shri -- by the President of India in 2007.

In 2014-2015, she marked the completion of four decades of dedication to classical dance, since her arangetram in 1974.

2016 marks the silver jubilee celebrations of Natya Vriksha.
