Event Description : TALK : ILF Samanvay No-Tongues-Barred Conversations: 'Languages of Delhi'.

With an aim to build a sustainable intercultural platform facilitating genuine camaraderie among Indian languages, our first event will be a conversation around the theme 'Languages of Delhi' in an effort to bring out the multi-linguality of the city.
The focus will be on the language spoken in Delhi, pre and post-independence. It will address the evolution of the language, its influencers and transformation and talk about the various expressions of the language - in literature and poetry, while also including the impact on the language when the old city became a metro, bringing with it people from other backgrounds to mingle. The discussion will be interspersed with prose pieces from writers who have written about Delhi city.
The speakers are Alok Rai, Sohail Hashmi and Syeda Hameed. The evening will include llustrative readings and presentations featuring Dilli tongues by Fouzia Dastango.

Alok Rai says he is not a professor of English at the University of Delhi any more. He would love to say that he has retired, both from the university and from Delhi, in horror. But the truth, as always, is rather more mundane, he asserts.

Sohail Hashmi is a Dilliwalla, who loves to talk about his city, conducts heritage walks, makes documentaries and writes.

Dr Syeda Saiyidain Hameed: A writer and a feminist, Dr Syeda Hameed, is widely recognized for her passionate engagement in public affairs and social issues, especially for women, minorities and peace. She is a former Member of the Planning Commission of India and the National Commission for Women, while also being the founding member of the Muslim Women’s Forum.

Fouzia Dastango: Fouzia is the first woman Dastango of modern times and has been working towards integrating storytelling with education. She belongs to Old Delhi and brings this flavour to her storytelling, while also  narrating women-centric tales.

Panelists: Alok Rai, cultural commentator, Sohail Hashmi, heritage activist, Syeda Hameed, educationist. Readings by Fouzia Dastango. Launch of ILF Samanvay Documentation Project, 'Langscaping Delhi: Mapping a City's Linguistic Routes'.
