Event Description : Habitat Photosphere to host a stimulating workshop on the ‘art of Selfies’, to be conducted by photographer and film maker Parthiv Shah.

Does the ‘selfie’ owe its historical origin to the art of self portraiture? How has technology fast-forwarded the selfie phenomenon? And the most eagerly asked question – what is the best way of taking selfies? These and many other interesting questions will be answered during a stimulating photography workshop being conducted by ace photographer Parthiv Shah under the aegis of Habitat Photosphere, the one-year-long photography festival initiated by India Habitat Centre. Titled ‘Self Portrait to Selfie: Redefining Image Making’, the day-long workshop.

Says Parthiv Shah: “In the year 2013, ‘Selfie’ was declared as ‘the word of the Year’ by the Oxford Dictionary. Over the past decade, the phenomenon has emerged as one of the top trends in an image crazed world, being appropriated by the common masses, celebrities and politicians alike. The ‘Age of Selfie’ as it has come to be known, might be the result of unprecedented changes in technology and the rise of social media; but it owes tremendously to the old-age genre of self-portrait.”

The long history of self-portraiture seems to have begun during the middle ages with painting. For some, it was meant to symbolize the primacy of authorship, for others it represented a case of self-consciousness and personal scrutiny, perhaps also a way to document their lives. From the prolific work of 15th century painters like Rembrandt to the almost neurotic efforts by the modernists like Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, the practice soon made its way into the busy annals of the photographic world.

Adds Shah: “The accessibility of capturing devices and sharing technologies in the 21st century prompt us to discuss these intertwined practices of representation. Contextualizing the socio-economic and cultural changes over the past centuries, the interactive workshop will explore how questions of identity and self-fashioning have been transformed by the modern ways of 'image-making'. Participants will also gain insights into the normalised distinctions of public and private narratives and newer cultures of memory-making in the contemporary society.”

Shah is a practising photographer, designer and filmmaker who has extensively researched and published on the themes of representation and visual arts. He is the Founder-Director of Centre for Media and Alternative Communication (CMAC). An alumnus of the National Institute of Design, India, he has been awarded a senior fellowship in Photography by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, Charles Wallace Fellowship, UK and Fulbright Lectureship award to teach photography at the UCLA, USA.
