A video recording of a live production starring the great tenor Luciano Pavarotti and soprano Kathleen Battle from the Metropolitan Opera House, New York. Conductor: James Levine. Sunit Tandon introduces Donizetti’s popular opera, which includes the well-loved aria “Una furtiva lagrima” (A furtive tear). The plot follows Adina, the beautiful but fickle landowner, and Nemorino, the clumsy but lovable young man, through the ups and downs of their love story. Nemorino adores Adina, but Adina feigns indifference to tease him. She announces that she will marry the pompous Sergeant Belcore. In desperation, Nemorino purchases a “love potion” sold by the charlatan Dulcamara that will make Adina fall in love with him, but which is actually cheap red wine that only makes him tipsy. After many twists and turns, Adina finally realizes and confesses her love for Nemorino, and they rejoice with the town.
