Event Description : BOOK LAUNCH & TALK "Contemporary Malaysian Indians".
Global Research Forum on Diaspora and Transnationalism (GRFDT) in collaboration with the Institute of Ethnic Studies (KITA), National University of Malaysia( UKM) is pleased to invite you for the book launch and its seminar on "Contemporary Malaysian Indians"
The book on "Contemporary Malaysian Indians: History,Issues,Challenges & Prospects" edited by Deniosn Jayasooria and K.S.Nathan from the Institute of Ethnic studies (KITA), National University of Malaysia (UKM) will be launched at the event.
Very often, writings on the Indian community have been undertaken primarily by ethnic writers. However, in this volume we have academic writers from various communities who have researched on urban poverty and community development, and have shared their research findings on socio-economic issues and policies that directly impact the Indian community, especially the urban poor. It is noteworthy that of the 33 contributors to
this volume, four are Indian citizens and four are non-Indian Malaysians, which is an important indication that sound empirical socio-economic analysis invariably transcends ethnicity and race to engulf the concerns of all low income families and especially those in the bottom 40 percent. In addition, we have two overseas writerswho are themselves specialists on the Indian diaspora, while 20 contributors are academics/professionals with Ph.D qualifications. This is a very significant contribution of the academic communityto this very important subject in the overall context of Malaysia’ssocio-economic development and aspirations to achieve balanced, equitable, and sustainable growth as a Developed Country by 2020.
