Event Description : DANCE "World Dance Day 2016" Curated by Geeta Chandran

The highlight of WDD-2016 is a featured dialogue between Dr. Yamini Krishnamurthi who was recently bestowed with the Padma Vibhushan honour by the President of India. The unparalleled doyenne of classical dance will share her history, memories and thoughts with dancer Geeta Chandran.

Also planned is a unique tribute to abhinaya queen (Padma Bhushan) Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan, who passed away recently. This tribute in dance will feature Vidushi

Dr.  Kapila Vatsyayan ji who catalysed Kalanidhi to renew her work in Bharatanatyam abhinaya. Also featured in the tribute session will be three dance students of Kalanidhi Narayanan: Guru Smt. Jamuna Krishnan, Smt. Rasika Khanna and Smt. Pratibha Prahlad (Padmashri).

Natya Vriksha’s prestigious 2016 YOUNG DANCERS FESTIVAL presents four young volvcanoes of talent: Bhavana Reddy, daughter and disciple of the famed first family of Kuchipudi,   Raja-Radha-Kaushalya Reddy, will open the fest with her scintillating Kuchipudi.

This will be followed by a unique presentation by Dr. Swarnamalya Ganesh of Chennai. Alluringly titled FROM THE ATTIC, the dancer will present her recreation and research of the old histories of Bharatanatyam/Sadr dance/Devadasi dance through an interactive performance.

The second day of the Young Dancers Fest will feature Bharatanatyam by the talented dancer Dr. Vasudevan Iyengar, followed by Kathak by Sanjukta Sinha from Ahmedabad. Sanjukta’s performance is entitled “Riwayaat " which means tradition. Performed within the repertoire and traditional form of Kathak, Sanjukta’s presentation will portray mystical love, using subtle bhava...expressions, flowing movements, intricate footwork and intensely rhythmic patterns. Riwayaat is planned as a musical journey in search of the love that is mystically divine.

The morning sessions on both days will showcase different dimensions of dance.

On Saturday morning, in a demonstration of a Bharatanatyam studio class at Natya Vriksha literally meaning The Tree of Dance, (Padmashri) Geeta Chandran will offer a glimpse into the minutiae behind growing a tree.  The audience will experience Bharatanatyam experienced at Natya Vriksha, which is firmly rooted in the creative traditions of South Asia. What is taught might ostensibly seem like movements set to rhythm and sound, but a closer look reveals it to be an ode to poetry and philosophy, textiles and treatises. Here, Bharatanatyam is seen as a complex human enterprise.  Like all art, the art taught at Natya Vriksha offers a deep and abiding solace.

Sunday morning will feature a workshop entitled MUSCLE MEMORY - - the body as canvas/storehouse for memories, movements and choreography. In this session involving voice, breath, movement and dance, renowned dancer Anita Ratnam will lead segues between learned dance routines and everyday postures.

The somatic inspired 3 hour intensive will examine what the urban Indian body -born in the decade before the millennium- has imbibed through parental inputs, a guru’s lessons and the 24/7 carousel of technology and social media.

The workshop participants will be asked to "mine" their memories for individual body behaviour, examine the daily “performance” of Indian ritual as “performance" and re-look at the decade or more of training in classical dance or allied movement disciplines. What the muscle retains as “remembered vocabulary” is often very different from what the mind has processed through formal dance classes.

Supported primarily by the Ministry of Culture and the India International Centre, and with additional assistance from OIL INDIA, NTPC and INDIAN OIL, Geeta Chandran’s World Dance Day events is a “must attend” for all lovers of dance and art.
